This
award-winning program was initiated in 1980 to provide an
opportunity for outstanding high school or college students
who want to pursue careers in science or medicine to work
in the research lab, observe human surgery, and make rounds
with physicians. These students, who work during the summer
or on a semester basis, not only gain invaluable hands-on
experience working at the research laboratory, but are also
paid by the Foundation for their work, with the understanding
that these funds are earmarked to defray their educational
expenses.
The program
has resulted in many gifted students finding a path into the
medical and scientific professions, as well as recognized
an important correlation between research, medicine, and the
human factor in treating other people. The CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation
was cited as Cooperative Employer of the Year by Texas A&M
University in 1984, an honor previously won by Dow Chemical
Company, Monsanto, and NASA.
Since
its start in 1980, more than 200 high school and college students
have participated in the paid internship program at the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation. The competition to receive a scholarship is tough.
The accepted students are determined to make the most of their
opportunity.
